OLEA expands in Africa

After five years of successful collaboration, OLEA has reached an agreement to acquire Marsh Uganda and Marsh Botswana.

Through the merger of Marsh Uganda with OLEA’s existing Uganda operation and the strengthening of our presence in Botswana, we reaffirm our commitment to serving our customers with excellence. OLEA at the 32nd Risk Management Meeting

Our teams took part in the 32nd Risk Management Meeting, the essential event for the risk and insurance professions, held in Deauville in France, from 5 to 7 February, 2025.

Ayouba Seydou, OLEA's Placement and Reinsurance Director, participated with other experts in the workshop, ‘Managing geopolitical risks in Africa: Organising resilience,’ workshop.

This exchange highlighted the continent's challenges and opportunities, emphasising the importance of resilience in the face of political instability, armed conflict and security risks. Speakers highlighted key levers such as geographic diversification, strategic intelligence and local partnerships, to mitigate these risks.

The role of the broker was reinforced as being essential: Advising on suitable insurance cover, facilitating claims management and supporting companies in a complex environment. Concrete examples, such as those of the Dangote Group illustrated how effective risk and insurance management enables companies to adapt and protect their activities.

OLEA to FANAF

From 22-26 February, 2025, OLEA teams will be in Marrakech for the 49th General Assembly of FANAF (Fédération des Sociétés d'Assurances de droit National Africaines), at the Palais des Congrès.

This year's theme: What are the levers for inclusive and sustainable insurance development in Africa? This is a key topic for the future of the sector, promising enriching exchanges on innovation, accessibility and the resilience of insurance models in Africa.

Cyber threats in 2024: Unprecedented sophistication, calls for heightened vigilance

In 2024, cyber threats reached unprecedented levels, exacerbated by the rise of generative AI tools and the increasing use of personal cloud applications. Clicks on phishing links have tripled and businesses are now facing attacks of unmatched sophistication.

Phishing: Increasingly dangerous attacks

Phishing campaigns have become more targeted and dangerous. They have particularly targeted Microsoft credentials (42% of cases), using popular cloud platforms such as Google Drive to hide malicious content. Thanks to generative AI, cybercriminals are designing hyper-personalised messages, so convincing that they fool even the most vigilant users.

Bryan Rangapanaiken, IT Systems Security Manager at OLEA, warns: “The sophistication of today's attacks far exceeds what we've seen in the past. Cybercriminals have intensified their efforts to perfect their attacks, resulting in a 190% increase in phishing incidents. It's no longer just a question of technology but also of behavior. Vigilance, raising awareness and training teams, remains our best defense against these evolving threats. "

Personal cloud applications: A cybersecurity blind spot

With 88% of companies reporting incidents involving unapproved tools, the use of personal cloud applications is proving to be a major challenge. These platforms, often used to store or share sensitive data, are responsible for numerous breaches, particularly financial and medical data, which accounts for 60% of reported breaches.

Faced with this situation, the priority is to create a secure environment, while supporting employees in the adoption of best practices.

Generative AI: A driver of innovation that needs to be managed

The rapid adoption of tools like ChatGPT has transformed the daily lives of businesses but unfortunately, with these innovations come new risks. Cybercriminals exploit these technologies to design more complex attacks, while unsupervised use of these tools can lead to the leakage of sensitive data.

The answer lies in a proactive approach: Raising employee awareness, supervising usage via clear internal policies and investing in automated monitoring solutions, such as Data Loss Prevention (DLP).

Olivier Dubois, Chairman, OLEA

I'm pleased to inform you of several important updates in the Group.

Firstly, we continue to strengthen our teams so they can support the dynamic growth of our activities across the Continent. The expertise and talent of our people are the pillars of our success. It is in this context that I am pleased to announce several internal appointments.

Mélina Assélé Diouf Nkombe has been promoted to Deputy Managing Director of OLEA, Gabon in 2023. Mélina joined OLEA Gabon in 2018 as Technical Co-ordinator, after a rich career with AXA France and various insurers and brokers in Gabon. Her solid experience makes her a key asset for our growth in the region.

Grâce Amoikon has been Deputy Managing Director of OLEA Côte d'Ivoire since July 2024. With more than 15 years' insurance experience in France and Côte d'Ivoire, Grâce has risen through the ranks within OLEA, successively holding the positions of Technical Manager and then Technical and Claims Director.

Albert Sagna has also been appointed Deputy Managing Director of OLEA, Senegal since August 2024. A recognised expert on the Senegalese market, Albert joined OLEA in 2018, following the takeover of a local broker. As Technical Director since 2019, he has played a crucial role in the development strategy. Today, he supports Maurice Bouzemarène, former Managing Director of OLEA, Cameroon who is now Managing Director of OLEA, Senegal, in his new role.

Cédric de Zélicourt, former Managing Director of OLEA Senegal, has been appointed Deputy Group Sales Director. Based in Paris, he will be responsible for developing the Groups’ new business.

Ghita Benyoussef was appointed Managing Director of OLEA Morocco in September 2024. Ghita joined OLEA Maroc in 2019 as Production Manager and Key Account Manager, before becoming Customer Director in 2022.

Paul Le Pêcheur, formerly Managing Director of OLEA Morocco, has been managing the Mozambique subsidiary since September 2024.

Finally, I would like to welcome Fayez Samb who joined the Group in September 2024 as Managing Director of OLEA, Cameroon. Fayez has over 25 years' experience in the insurance industry and has held positions of responsibility in France, Cameroon, Mali and Senegal. His experience and knowledge will be a real asset in the development of our activities in Cameroon.

As well as these internal changes, I would like to highlight the commitment of our subsidiaries to our CSR project, OLEA Impact. To mark Pink October, a month dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer, our subsidiaries joined forces with healthcare partners to organise local screening and awareness campaigns.

These announcements and initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting our employees in their professional development and making a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate. Together, we will continue to build a strong, positive and enlightened Group.
